About Rouge

Rouge is a new cafe and wine bar in Cambridge, New Zealand. Opened in June 2009 by family team Alana and Phil MacKay and Andrew McCathie, Rouge has quickly become the place to be in Cambridge. Our team bring wide ranging experience to Rouge, from cafes and coffee roasting, to restaurants, to events management.

We have long held the belief that what makes a really good cafe is the combination of good fresh food, great coffee, quality wine, and of course top-notch service. The concept for Rouge originated out of our frustration at not being able to find this complete package anywhere in town. It’s a concept that has evolved over cups of coffee and long afternoons enjoying great wine!

The hard part of course is turning the concept into reality.
Wherever possible we’ve tried to use local suppliers from the Waikato region. We strongly believe that the best food is simple food, made with fresh, local ingredients. This is an approach we’ve applied across the whole business, using many local products, and choosing a great Waikato coffee company - Essenza. We also place a focus on New Zealand wines on our wine list, a job that’s very rarely difficult given the high standard of wine produced in our beautiful country. However it is an ongoing challenge searching out (and tasting of course!) new and interesting wines for our seasonal wine lists.
